Frederick Strauel was born in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, on August 3, 1887. He worked at Clausen, Burch and Pillsbury as an engineer for a short time, then was employed in the engineering department of the Tri-State Telephone and Telegraph Company in Minneapolis for five years (1908-1913). Much of his career was spent as a draftsman in the firm of Purcell andamp; Elmslie (1913-1931). Strauel maintained their office in Minneapolis during the 1920s after the partners left the state.
